A vintage Moorcroft vase in the Pomegranate design by William Moorcroft.
With a height of 15.50cm (6.10 inch) and a weight of 0.50kg the vase presents as a substantial item.
The Pomegranate design was introduced 1910 i.e. while William Moorcroft was still with the James Macintyre works but was continued by him when he set up his own factory at Cobridge on the outskirts of Burslem in 1913. Pomegranate became Moorcroft's most successful design and continued to be produced until the latter part of the 1930's with design updates along the way.
This particular vase has a number of impressed backstamps on the base including the Signature, POTTER TO HM THE QUEEN (to the bottom right hand side of the signature) and MADE IN ENGLAND. These backstamps represent a date range of c1928 to 1949.
By combining the date information above it would be reasonable to assess the age of the vase as from c1928 to the latter part of the 1930's and is clearly of genuine vintage age.
Condition: Vintage items may have small imperfections and/or idiosyncrasies due to the manufacturing processes of the day, usage perhaps over many years and how an item has been stored but any significant issues will always be highlighted in the description.
This vase has been closely inspected and assessed as in excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks or significant surface marks noted.
The upper surface of the vase appears virtually free of crazing with only very modest levels present and best seen under a loop glass. Any noticeable crazing seems confined to the base.
There is a great deal of content in the design which includes one open and four closed pomegranates against a pattern of berries and foliage. The colours remain bright and on the dark blue ground make for a very attractive item. Nb For clarification the ground colour is dark blue and not black.
An opportunity for a collector to add a piece of vintage Moorcroft pottery from the highly collectable pomegranate range, to a collection. Of course the physical size of the vase means it would likely be suitable to display as a stand alone item as well as part of a collection.
This Moorcroft vase in the pomegranate design is only available online, however if visiting the Antiques Centre in York please view Cabinet 138 situated on the Lower Ground Floor where other pieces of Moorcroft Pottery can be viewed.
