A vintage Moorcroft vase in the Orchid pattern by Walter Moorcroft.
With a height of 15.2cm (6.02 inch) and a weight of 0.61kg the vase presents as an impressive item.
The orchid pattern was originally developed by William Moorcroft c1937 and further developed by Walter Moorcroft in the 1940's and 1950's .
Regarding age it can be difficult to assess with absolute certainty as some production runs could be quite long, and it was not until 1990 that Moorcroft began using year cyphers to show when an item was actually made.
As there is no year cypher on the vase the latest possible date of manufacture would be 1989 however there are a number of ways to narrow this down.
There are impressed MOORCROFT and MADE IN ENGLAND back stamps on the base which with their positioning would indicate a date range c1949 to 1986. But also referral to reference book states the orchid design was last used in 1972.
From the detail above the age can reasonably be assessed as c1950's/60's and in any event of genuine vintage age.
This vase has been closely inspected and assessed as in excellent condition.
The floral pattern has an amazing amount of content which on the dark blue ground makes for a very attractive item which should prove a worthy addition to many a collection of vintage Moorcroft pottery. Of course its physical size means the vase could be suitable to display as a stand alone item, as well as part of a collection.
This vase in the orchid pattern is available either by online order or by visiting the Antiques Centre in central York. If visiting the Centre the vase, along with other pieces of Moorcroft pottery, can be found in Cabinet 138 situated on the Lower Ground Floor.
