A striking pair of 1979 Mexican modernist clip-on earrings by celebrated Taxco silversmith Miguel Melendez, crafted in sterling silver and set with deep blue lapis lazuli.
Each earring has a bold circular form with an wonderfully organic openwork design, reminiscent of irregular cells, pebbles or natural rock formations. Scattered throughout are free-form sections of richly coloured lapis lazuli, creating a beautiful contrast against the highly reflective silver. Measuring 25mm in diameter.
The earrings have been professionally polished, bringing the sterling silver back to a bright, lustrous finish and allowing the sculptural openwork and rich blue lapis to really stand out. They remain vintage pieces and may retain minor signs of age and previous wear consistent with their history.
Finished with substantial hinged clip fittings for non-pierced ears. The reverse is stamped STERLING together with Miguel Melendez/Mexican workshop and assay marks.
A superb and very wearable example of late-1970s Taxco modernism, combining strong sculptural form with the wonderful craftsmanship for which Mexican silver jewellery of this period is renowned.
